Before the release of the Polonez Kombi, a proper estate version of the Polonez you can see above, there was a different way of turning a standard, liftback Polonez into something (in theory) more practical. You don’t see them around very often, but I managed to spot one of those “conversions” today.

Yup. It’s literally a somewhat squared off replacement for teh rear hatch. The boot opening is still exactly the same, as the whole extra bit just lifts off as if it were a regular hatch. It’s still hinged in the same spot.

This is how a regular Polonez Caro Plus looks like. You just get one, buy one of those fatter replacement hatches to slap on the back, and hey presto! You’ve got yourself a practical estate.

...oh Lord...

How is the fit and finish on these replacement hatches? Do they work as well as the original hatch when it comes to keeping water and noise out?

They’re upholstered on the inside and add a little boot light, so that’s decent, but I’d be surprised if they didn’t make the car more boomy inside.

Then again, it’s a Polonez, nobody buying one of those in the 90's could realistically expect a refined car.

Didn’t know a Polonez estate existed. BTW, there was a similar conversion hatch for the gen 1 Fiat Croma. I just can’t find a picture.

I’ll be honest, I’ve actually wanted to see someone try that approach in the form of a hardtop for the Miata that also replaces the trunk lid. It wouldn’t be quite as good for cargo versatility, because the panel between the trunk and the soft top stowage area would still be present, but...

The Polonez had a pretty enormous selection of body styles. It started as just the 5-dr liftback, but then came a 3-door, a coupe, a huge amount of ute/pickup/box/chassis truck variants, a cargo van, a passenger van (mostly used for ambulances), a 4x4, a saloon, and an estate.

Here are some examples:

Terrible....but you had to admit, it was pretty clever engineering to get a bit of extra space that actually worked!
